Established in 2004, the Bharata Mata School of Social Work (BMSSW) has grown into one of the leading institutions for social work education, training, research, and community outreach in India. What began with a dedicated team of faculty members and two batches of aspiring social workers has evolved into a vibrant academic community committed to professional excellence, ethical practice, and social transformation. The School currently offers a Master of Social Work (MSW) programme with an annual intake of 50 students and specialisations in Medical and Psychiatric Social Work, Family and Child Welfare, and Community Development. In 2024, BMSSW expanded its academic offerings by introducing the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) programme under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP), admitting 50 students annually. The BSW programme offers specialisation pathways in Development Social Work, Medical and Psychiatric Social Work, Labour Welfare, and Multicultural Social Work. In addition, the School conducts certificate programmes in emerging areas such as Child and Adolescent Counselling, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and Public Policy, enabling learners to acquire specialised knowledge and professional competencies.
BMSSW has earned national recognition for its academic excellence and professional training. In the latest India Today Best Colleges Rankings, the School secured the 30th position in India in the Master of Social Work (MSW) category, reaffirming its standing among the country's premier institutions for social work education.
The programmes offered by BMSSW embody a dynamic blend of classroom learning, field-based practice, research, advocacy, and social action. Students engage with diverse settings including hospitals, mental health institutions, child welfare agencies, industries, schools, non-governmental organizations, and community-based initiatives. This experiential learning approach enables them to develop critical thinking, professional competence, leadership qualities, and a deep commitment to social justice and human rights. The School is dedicated to creating an inclusive learning environment that promotes equal opportunities and holistic development. Guided by the core values of the social work profession, BMSSW strives to empower vulnerable populations, strengthen human capacities, support at-risk groups, and contribute to sustainable social development. Faculty members and students actively participate in research, consultancy, policy advocacy, and community interventions aimed at addressing contemporary social challenges.
The academic environment at BMSSW is enriched by a carefully designed curriculum that integrates theory, fieldwork, research, and community engagement. The School is supported by a team of highly qualified and experienced faculty members who bring together expertise from academia, research, industry, and professional practice. Through innovative teaching-learning approaches and strong field practicum partnerships, students are prepared to respond effectively to the evolving needs of individuals, families, groups, organisations, and communities.
Extending its commitment beyond the classroom, Bharata Mata College established the registered Non-Governmental Organization, BeFORE (Bharata Mata Extension for Organic, Research and Environment), on 9 August 2017 under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Act, 1955. Through BeFORE, the institution strengthens its outreach initiatives, promotes environmental sustainability, facilitates community development programmes, and builds meaningful partnerships with government agencies, civil society organizations, industries, and local communities. The platform provides students and faculty with valuable opportunities to engage in transformative social action while contributing to the well-being and development of society.
Rooted in a vision of social responsibility and professional excellence, Bharata Mata School of Social Work continues to nurture compassionate, competent, and socially committed professionals who are equipped to create positive change at local, national, and global levels.
