Two years in Bharata Mata School of Social Work was a transformation period in my personal and professional life. The initial days of social worker life was filled chaos and it was a new experience for me and it was a different field, being a Tourism graduate. But as day's passed by, these chaos leaded me to right decision. The filed work was the game changer that helped to identify my area of interest and also how to apply the theoretical knowledge into practical setting. Working with Adhisakthi was a turning point as it gave me the idea on how to work with indigenous people and also to support the students with their education. The camps and events helped me to interact with these groups. The second semester filed gave more experience in dealing with community. After deciding to serve the community by taking Community Development as my specialization, the professional life was more enhanced and the internship at NJSI Nepal helped me to gain more idea on dealing with the rural community of Nepal. The final internship with Suchitwa Mission gave me idea how the Government projects were implemented and how to create plans and proposal. All these helped me become more professional. Rural camp was the best part of my MSW life as it gave me more exposure and ways to handle all the challenge and risk and also new skills. All those make me to know my area of interest in social work filed and also to become a professional.
Embarking on a postgraduate journey in social work is a transformative experience that immerses individuals in the intricate tapestry of human lives. Over the course of two years, my voyage as a social work trainee at Bharata Mata School of Social Work is marked by profound encounters, self-discovery, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting the vulnerable."
The first year of my postgraduate social work program introduced me to the foundational principles of the field. In the classroom, theories came alive as I delved into case studies and engaged in spirited discussions. Yet, it was the fieldwork that truly broadened my horizons. Guided by mentors, I stepped into shelters, rehabilitation centres, and community clinics, witnessing the poignant stories of those often marginalized by society.
The initial year tested my preconceptions and exposed me to the intricate nuances of social issues. Confronting homelessness, addiction, and systemic injustice, I began to appreciate the multifaceted nature of human struggles. Empathy bloomed within me, accompanied by a fervent desire to alleviate suffering and ignite positive change.
As the second year unfolded, I found myself at a crossroads between academic understanding and practical application. Empowered by the experiences of the first year, I eagerly embraced the challenges of direct client interaction. The crucible of the second year forged resilience within me. Walking alongside survivors of hardships and witnessing their courage, I recognized the strength of the human spirit. Simultaneously, my own limitations and vulnerabilities came into sharp focus. I learned to lean on peers and mentors, cultivating a network of support that proved invaluable during the most trying moments.
As I reflected on my two-year odyssey, a profound realization emerged – social work was not merely a profession but a calling. The privilege of standing at the intersection of lives and making a tangible impact was a responsibility I gladly embraced. My heart swelled with gratitude for the transformative journey that had allowed me to discover my purpose. From classrooms to shelters, from theories to tangible change, this journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the boundless potential for compassionate action. As I step forth into the world as a qualified social worker, I am armed not only with theoretical knowledge but with the wisdom earned through firsthand experiences – a beacon of hope committed to navigating humanity through its myriad crossroads.
I was a student at Bharata Mata School of Social Work from 2020 to 2022, and I can confidently say it’s a place that profoundly influenced my personal growth and perspective on life. After completing my Bachelor’s degree in English Literature, at Rajagiri College, I specifically chose to pursue a Master’s degree in Social Work at Bharata Mata College.

BMSSW presented a challenging yet rewarding experience, filled with intensive coursework and fieldwork at the grassroots level, where I could apply the valuable skills I learned from the exceptional faculty. At times, the workload might seem overwhelming, leading to exhaustion and thoughts of giving up. The environment at BMSSW is conducive to your personal and academic growth, but your active participation is crucial. It serves as a supportive companion on your journey, but you must take the initiative to experience, engage, and develop. In the end, my initial intuition was spot-on. BMSSW was unquestionably one of the best decisions of my life. MSW programme Promotes Confidence and Personal Growth, I completed my MSW and worked as a Data entry operator at General Hospital Ernakulam for covid duty before starting as a field care supervisor in a UK based homecare institution. Being a member of the BMC MSW family has improved my perspective, increased my sense of self-worth, and helped me develop professionally and personally.
After completing my BBA, I dreamt only of pursuing an MBA. However, a sudden change of mind led me to MSW. Now, you can imagine the troubles that I would face following that.In the beginning, the course was a herculean task for me. I can proudly say that I completed my MSW only because of the support extended to me by my friends and the faculty members, especially our HOD Mrs. Sheena.
During the initial days, my stage fear made me avoid all the presentations, facilitations, and other activities. However, being made to organize simple tasks led to me presenting a paper at an international conference. This also helped reduce my stage fear and allowed me to sing on stage.
I came to know about the Gandhi Fellowship while in college but was unable to apply for it soon after finishing the course due to some personal reasons. I joined the fellowship a year later.
My first posting was in Odisha; it was then I realized how the two years at BMC had influenced me.
I am at a loss for words to express how the two years at BMC had positively impacted me during the last one year of the fellowship. The college polished me into a different individual who can handle tasks responsibly.
It was only when I interacted with my students and other educational officials that I realized the things I learned from BMC were helping me practically.
