School of Social Work, Bharata Mata College (Autonomous), Thrikkakara, successfully organized a two-day Street Theatre Workshop for the MSW Third Semester students on 21–22 July 2026.
The workshop was led by renowned cine artist Mr. Kumar Sunil, known for his role in the National Award-winning film Feminichi Fathima, with the support of Mr. Pratheesh and Mr. Amos C.
The programme was inaugurated in the esteemed presence of Dr. Soumya Thomas (Principal), Prof. Dr. Johnson M. K. (Academic Director), Mrs. Sheena Rajan Philip (Head of the Department), Mr. Sooraj M. V. (Faculty), Dr. Ramesh Krishnan (Faculty), along with the resource persons.
Designed around an experiential learning approach, the workshop introduced students to the philosophy, history, and practice of street theatre as a powerful medium for social awareness, advocacy, and community engagement. Through warm-up exercises, improvisation, situational acting, voice and body language training, and collaborative activities, students strengthened their confidence, creativity, communication, and teamwork.
As part of the workshop, students conceptualized and performed street plays addressing significant social issues, including dowry, domestic violence, toxic relationships, anti-ragging, and the NEET examination, while also participating in a creative fashion show. The final performances reflected the students' commitment to using theatre as a meaningful tool for social change.
More than a theatre workshop, the programme became a transformative learning experience that nurtured leadership, public speaking, critical thinking, collaboration, and social responsibility, reaffirming the role of art in inspiring dialogue and empowering communities.
